Trump to take control of DC police, activate national guard

President Trump announced on Monday that he was taking federal control of Washington, DC, Police Department and deploying the National Guard in the nation’s capital in an attempt to tighten the crime.

Trump said, “Our capital city has overtaken the violent gangs and criminals of blood, inciting a crowd of wild youth, frenzy and homeless people have been thrown out of drugs, and we are not allowing it to happen anymore. We are not going to pick it up,” Trump said.

Under the Home Rules Act, Trump can temporarily control the police department of the district if he determines that “special conditions of emergency nature exist.”

Trump also has the right to activate the DC National Guard without local approval, although he is banned in some other functions by the Home Rule Act, which provides various powers to the local government of the district.
