President Trump on Thursday announced that his administration would impose 35 percent tariffs on all Canadian goods starting next month.
Trump posted a letter sent to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in which he outlined the upcoming tariff. This week, Trump has posted letters to more than a dozen countries, trying to put standing tariffs on imports starting from 1 August.
The President argued that Canada did not enough to prevent the flow of Phantenile in the United States, even though the relatively low Phantanel crosses the northern border every year compared to the southern border.
Trump wrote to Carney, “If the Canada works with me to stop the flow of Phantenile, we, perhaps, will consider an adjustment in this letter,” Trump wrote to Carney. “These tariffs can be modified up or downwards, depending on our relationship with your country.”
The US had earlier imposed a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, although Trump later exempted products covered under the 2020 trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico. It is not clear whether those discounts will still be applicable as August 1.
Trump has claimed for months for months against Canada, claiming that the US has no need for Canada and Canada has been described as anxing as the 51st state.
Carney and other Canadian leaders have rejected the suggestion and said that the two nations do better as partners.
