Trump says there 'could' be US boots on the ground, airstrikes in Nigeria

President Trump said on Sunday that American boots are likely to fall on the ground air strikes in nigeria He told the Defense Department over the weekend to “be prepared for possible action” in the country amid reported attacks on Christians.

When Trump was asked if he had imagined this scenario, he told reporters on Air Force One, “Maybe.”

“They are killing Christians in record numbers in Nigeria,” he added, alleging that Christians are being killed in “very large numbers”.

“We will not let this happen,” he said.

The President said in a Truth Social post on Saturday that he is directing the Department of Defense to prepare for possible action in Nigeria.

“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the murder of Christians, the United States will immediately cease all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and will go into that infamous country ‘guns-blazing’ to completely eliminate the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrific atrocities,” Trump wrote on stage.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded to Trump on the social platform X by writing “Yes Sir”.

“The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria and elsewhere must stop immediately,” Hegseth wrote. “The War Department is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian government protects Christians, or we kill the Islamic terrorists who are committing these terrible atrocities.”

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said on Saturday that his government is committed to working with the United States.

Tinubu wrote on “Religious freedom and tolerance have been and will always be core principles of our collective identity.”
