President Trump said Monday he would “love to meet” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his trip to Asia this week.
“If he would like to meet, I would love to meet him. I get along very well with Kim Jong Un. I like him. He likes me,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Japan. “If he wants to meet, I’ll be in South Korea.”
Trump said he was willing to extend his trip to meet the North Korean leader.
Trump’s comments come after he said Friday he was open to meeting the North Korean leader, whom he first met in 2019.
Trump said, “Okay, if he reaches out, I will. The last time I met him, I put it on the Internet that I was coming to South Korea and if he wants to meet, I’m ready to do that. I will do that. If you want to make your point, I’m ready to do that.” “They don’t have a lot of telephone service. They have a lot of nuclear weapons but not a lot of telephone service. I’m all for it.”
“He probably knows I’m coming, right? Trump said later. “Yeah, I’m ready for it, 100 percent. I get along very well with Kim Jong Un.”
Trump met with Kim during his first term in office in an effort to get North Korea to agree to disarm its nuclear program. Pyongyang has since conducted several intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
