President Trump did not mention Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsom Earl-Sears (R) by name during an election eve tele-rally held ahead of the state’s gubernatorial race on Tuesday.
“Get out and vote for Jason Miyares tomorrow, it’s very important,” Trump said on the call. “And Republicans up and down the ballot. We have Republicans up and down the ballot.”
The President praised Miyares throughout the call, at one point referring to him as “probably the best” Attorney General.
“Jason Miyares is a wonderful man, a wonderful attorney general,” Trump said. “He has my full support.”
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) was also on the call and mentioned Earl-Sears along with the rest of the statewide Republican ticket. The Governor also praised Miyares the most.
Youngkin said, “We have Winsom Sears for governor, John Reed for lieutenant governor, and of course our great Attorney General, who I think is the best Attorney General in America; we have to appoint him again as our Attorney General.”
Trump’s apparent dislike of Earl-Sears came to light when Trump formally endorsed former Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) in the race for mayor of New York City. The president also endorsed several congressional Republicans on Monday afternoon ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
Trump last month praised Earley-Sears as “very good” but stopped short of endorsing her specifically. The two have a complicated history, with Earl-Sears criticizing Trump after the Republicans’ poor 2022 midterm performance, saying in an interview that a true leader understands when they have become a liability. Trump hit back at Earl-Sears, calling her a “hypocrite” and saying he never felt good about her.
