President Trump defended Argentina late Sunday as his administration seeks $40 billion financially secured Help for the country.
“Argentina is fighting for its life, young lady, you don’t know anything about it,” Trump told a reporter on Air Force One in response to a question. “They are fighting for their lives. Argentina is not gaining anything.”
“They’re fighting for their lives. You understand what that means? They have no money, they have nothing. They’re fighting very hard to survive. If I can help them survive in a free world – I like the president of Argentina, I think he’s trying to do his best. But don’t think they’re doing very well.”
Trump’s administration wants to secure a total of $40 billion in financial assistance to help the country’s liberal leader stabilize Argentina’s troubled financial markets.
Earlier this month, the U.S. closed a $20 billion currency swap line with Argentina’s central bank in a bid to prop up Argentina’s President Javier Meili’s struggling economy.
Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said the US wanted to lend an additional $20 billion to Argentina through a mix of financing from sovereign funds and private banks.
“We are working on a $20 billion facility that will complement our swap lines with private banks and sovereign funds, which I believe will focus more on the debt market,” Besant told reporters.
The Treasury Secretary further said, “A number of banks are interested in this and a number of sovereign funds have expressed interest.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) criticized the Trump administration for wanting to provide up to $40 billion in financing for the Latin American country. Georgia Republican says Argentina should not benefit from taxpayer dollars Americans are challenged at home,
