Fort Lauderdale, Florida — oregon Coach Dan Lanning reiterated his desire to see the college football season end on January 1 each year, not only to streamline the sports calendar but also to reduce long layoffs between games for playoff teams.
During the final news conference on Wednesday before the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Capital One Orange Bowl, Lanning was asked what changes could be made to mitigate the issues that have plagued many CFP teams, including coordinators taking head coaching jobs and opening the transfer portal on Jan. 2.
“Every playoff game has to be played every weekend until you finish the season,” Lanning said. “Even if that means we start Week 0 or you end up having a bye, the season ends Jan. 1, and then the portal opens up, then coaches who have to move on to their next opportunities can move on to their next opportunities.”

“Our national championship game this year is on January 19, and it’s really hard to imagine that as a coach who is going out and trying to join a new program and start a staff,” Lanning said. “It’s hard for players to understand what continuity looks like and where they’ll be and it’s hard to manage that with visits, portals, everything that’s in place. The obvious way to do that is to extend the season and make sure these playoff games happen very quickly.”

Last season, Oregon was the No. 1 seed in the CFP and was out for a long time, losing to Ohio State 41–21 in the quarterfinals. All four teams that received byes in the first round last season lost in the quarterfinals.

If the CFP moves to weekends in December, as Lanning wants, some of these questions will be reduced.
“I have a lot of respect for the NFL, but we’re a prep league for the NFL,” Lanning said. “We do a lot of favors for the NFL. We’re a small league in many ways, but there’s no money given to us by the NFL to take care of college football.
“We gave some of our days to the NFL. We said, ‘Oh, you guys want this day, you want this day, you want this day.’ Saturday should be sacred to college football, and every Saturday during the month of December should be college football.”
