A judge has rejected Tesla’s request to overturn the order $243 million jury verdict which held the automaker partially responsible for a fatal accident involving the Autopilot driver assistance system.
“The grounds that Tesla relies on for relief are virtually the same ones that Tesla put forward earlier during the trial and in its briefing on summary judgment – arguments that had already been considered and rejected,” Honorable. Judge Beth Bloom’s decision Reads. “Furthermore, Tesla does not present additional arguments or controlling law that would persuade this Court to change its earlier ruling or the jury’s decision.”
Last August, a jury returned a $243 million verdict against tesla Over its culpability in a fatal 2019 crash in Florida that killed Knibel Benavides and seriously injured Dillon Angulo. The jury found the driver two-thirds to blame and Tesla one-third responsible. Notably, the jury only assessed punitive damages against Tesla.
Tesla lawyers argued in their request to overturn the verdict that the blame lies with the driver, who helped cause the crash.
