The CBS broadcast showed Metcalf talking to the fan, who was wearing a blue wig and hanging onto the first-row railing.
CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson said on the broadcast, “He came over because the fan in the stands had a ‘4’ Pittsburgh jersey, he walked over and the fan said something to him.” “Obviously, Metcalf didn’t like what he said, and you saw the swipe there. None of the Steelers came up to him and mentioned anything.”
In one aspect of the incident Posted on InstagramMetcalf walked up to the fan, grabbed the collar of his shirt to pull him closer, then forcefully pushed him back. The fan who raised his hands after coming into contact with Metcalf was seen holding a yellow jersey.
After the win, Metcalf left the locker room without answering reporters’ questions.
detroit free press Spoke with the fan, who identified himself as Ryan Kennedy of Pinckney, Michigan. He said he called Metcalf by his full name – Dekelin Zecharius Metcalf – which started the conversation.
“I called him and then he grabbed me and tore my shirt,” Kennedy told the Free Press. “I’m a little surprised. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little upset, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”
The Lions told the Free Press that the fan was not removed from the game.
Asked about the fight after the game, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said: “I heard about it, but I didn’t see it and I didn’t get a chance to talk to DK, and so I don’t have any comment.”
When Tomlin was asked whether he was aware of this at halftime or whether he had considered not playing Metcalf in the second half, Tomlin said he “didn’t know.”
The Steelers’ offense struggled to the point of contention, recording only 68 yards in four possessions.
Metcalf re-entered the game on the Steelers’ next series. He was called for pass interference, to which the Detroit crowd reacted loudly. Metcalf also returned to play in the second half and had a first-down catch on the Steelers’ opening drive of the third quarter. He had four catches for 42 yards when the Steelers stopped the Lions.
Because no flag was thrown during the incident with the fan, the NFL cannot consider a disqualification, which is why Metcalf can continue playing. The league will review the incident and Metcalf could face discipline.
