SAN ANTONIO–Listed as questionable Sunday morning due to left calf tightness, San Antonio Spurs Center Victor Wembanyama were ruled out of the club’s matchup against Sacramento Kings,
“It’s something he felt,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I don’t think there was any particular play. Obviously, we’ve seen around this league lately, shin stiffness is not something you want to take lightly. So, [we’ve] Just need to get some more information. Don’t want to push it there.”
Wembanyama, 21, played 38 minutes in San Antonio’s physical NBA Cup loss on Friday Golden State Warriorsand contributed a team-high 26 points with 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. According to ESPN Research, this performance marked the Frenchman’s third consecutive outing with 25 points and 10 rebounds, matching the longest streak of his career.
Johnson said the early tip-off time for Sunday’s game against Sacramento was not a factor in the team’s decision to sit Wembanyama out.
“again, [with] Shin stiffness, there are some things you don’t want to happen if it’s an entrance or something like that,” Johnson said. “So, you just need to be clear about what’s going on here as a precaution.”
veteran joint Luke Cornett Will start from Vembanyama place.
In his third season, Vembanyama is averaging career highs in points (26.2), rebounds (12.9) and assists (4.0), while leading the league in blocks per game (3.6).
In other injury news, rookie guard dylan harper (left calf strain) is making “progress” according to Johnson. Harper first suffered a shin injury on November 2, but no longer wears a walking boot on his left foot.
“It’s getting better,” Johnson said. “He’s out of the boot. You’ve just got to prepare that thing. Every day you were in the boot or out on the court, you probably had to hit it the other way. It’ll be good to get him back on the court sooner.”
