Singapore – Both Williams cars have been disqualified in the Singapore Grand Prix with the results of Saturday’s qualifying session, found to open beyond the maximum limit allowed in the regulations after the drag rideuction system (DRS) flap on the wings behind both cars.

The DRS F1 serves as an overtaking assistance, which allows drivers within a second of the car to open a flap in the rear wing, reduce the drag and increase the top speed during the race. DRS is also available to drivers in areas allowed around the circuit during qualifying.
The maximum inauguration of the flap is 85 mm, but the post-session investigation found both Williams cars beyond the boundary.
A statement by a stewers stated, “During post-evaluation scrutining, the car’s rear wing was found to be non-essential with technical rules.” “The upper rear wing element adjustable posts were examined. In case of deployment, the DRS rear wing exceeded the maximum limit of 85 mm on both sides of the outer area.
“In the hearing, the contestant admitted that, although his own measurement before the merit showed the component within tolerance, the measurements made by the appointed FIA authorities later revealed a larger gap compared to the permission and hence the rear wing did not suit the required dimension.
“The contestant did not combat the accuracy of the measurement process, functioning, or measurement equipment used by the FIA. The contestant fully accepted the results of the FIA measurement and admitted that the rear wing fitted for the car did not follow the requirements of technical rules.”
In a statement following the verdict, the principal of the Williams team, James Walls, clarified that his team did not attempt to get the performance benefits and was investigating how the mistake was made.
“After qualifying during the FIA investigation, the rear wings on both our cars failed in the DRS slot gap check,” Walls said. “As a result, Alex and Carlos have been disqualified from qualifying for yesterday’s Singapore Grand Prix. It is very disappointing for the team and we are investigating immediately how it happened.
“At any point we were not demanding a performance benefit and the rear wings had passed their checks first during the day, but the only measurement that matters and we fully accept the FIA ruling.
“We have a car able to scoring here later this week and we will do everything to fight from behind the back of the grid tomorrow, and will immediately review our processes to ensure that it does not happen again.”
