Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has scheduled a vote Tuesday afternoon to reopen the government, giving Democrats a chance to vote for or against a House-passed continuation resolution that has repeatedly failed on the Senate floor.
The Senate is scheduled to meet at 3 pm and voting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm
This will be the eighth time senators will consider the House measure. Failed to advance on last seven votes,
This comes at a crucial time as military personnel are to receive their pay checks on October 15.
Over the weekend President Trump directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use “all available funds” to ensure troops are paid this week.
Senate Democrats won’t get a chance to vote Tuesday on their alternative government funding measure, which would permanently extend increased health insurance premium subsidies and restore nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts.
It would be the first time that Democrats will not be able to vote on their proposal to reopen the government before voting on a House GOP-drafted bill that would fund the government through Nov. 21.
“There’s only one choice: You either vote for a clean CR to reopen the government or you vote for a shutdown. They have no cover,” the Senate Republican aide said.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) filed a procedural motion last week to reconsider an alternative Democratic funding bill, but Democrats plan to bring that measure up for another vote at a later date.
Democrats say they have put themselves on record by voting seven times in favor of their proposal to fund the government through Oct. 31 and extend Affordable Care Act subsidies.
