
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) praised New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) for upsetting the Democratic establishment with a victory in the Big Apple.
“Starting from 1% in elections, @ZohranKMamdani Sanders pulled off one of the great political upsets in modern American history wrote in a post on the social platform X, with a photo of him and Mamdani.
“Yes. We can create a government that represents working people, not the 1%. I look forward to working with Zoharan as he creates a city that works for everyone,” he added.
Mamdani’s victory makes him the youngest mayor in the city’s history and the second democratic socialist to lead the most populous municipality in the country. He managed to overtake former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo early in the polls with his plan to introduce city-run grocery stores, free child care and other cost-saving measures for families.
The newly elected mayor of New York said his campaign was driven by connecting face-to-face with voters on the streets of all five boroughs.
“When we started this campaign, we said we wanted to knock on a million doors in five boroughs by the June primary. Some people laughed,” Mamdani. wrote in a statement on X, a few hours before polls closed.
He added, “You have to work. We crossed 1.6 million. In general, we said let’s do it again. Another million. We just passed three.”
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised his efforts.
“More people voted in a New York City election this year than in any previous 50 years. It’s a victory for democracy, and a testament to @ZohranKMamdani’s inspiring campaign,” Clinton wrote in a letter. statement on x,
“Congratulations to the next mayor of the world’s greatest city.”
