The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Thursday that it was canceling about 30 years of interpretation of the law, which allowed unspecified migrants to reach some federal public benefits.
The HHS stated that it was officially canceling the interpretation of individual responsibility and work opportunities reconciliation Act (PRWORA), which allowed unwarde migrants to reach services such as community health centers and head starts, federal programs that provide education, health and nutrition services to low -income families.
In the financial year 2022, Head Start provided services to 833,000 children and pregnant women.
Pravora, passed in 1996, prohibited the eligibility of profit for unwarded immigrants and many legal immigrants during its first few years in the US, but allowed states to increase profitable immigrants including programs for public health and emergency services.
“For a very long time, the government has twisted the tax dollar of Americans to encourage illegal immigration,” Kennedy said in a statement. “Today’s action changes that – it restores integrity for federal social programs, implements the law of law, and protects important resources for American people.”
HHS said in its announcement that the new interpretation reverses the “old exclusion” from the language of the bill.
Programs now left out of the restrictions of Pravora include Head Start, Health Center Program, Health Workforce Program and Drug Consumption Program. The new interpretation immediately becomes effective when published in the federal register, although there will be a 30-day comment period.
