Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a condition where proteins (called amyloid) accumulate in the brain, causing the blood vessels to weaken. According to the preliminary study presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2026, held in New Orleans on February 4-6, 2026, people with CAA are four times more likely to develop dementia within five years, regardless of whether they have had a stroke or not.
