Drivers for ride—hiling apps like Uber and Lyft will soon have the right to federation as independent contractors in California, thanks to the bill signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday.
It is part of a large deal between MPs, Unions and Ride-Heling companies, resulting in different bills passing, supporting low insurance requirements for Uber and Lyft, as well as union rights for their drivers. When the deal was First announced in AugustNewsom “described it as a historical agreement between workers and business that only California can distribute.”
Associated Press Report More than 800,000 drivers will get the right to join one union and will collectively bargain for better salary and profit. Ramona Preeto, head of Uber of Public Policy for California, told AP in a statement that both bills “represent an agreement that reduces costs for riders, creating a strong voice for drivers.”
