New study maps four key pathways to Alzheimer’s disease

UCLA health researchers have identified four separate routes that analyze electronic health records and lead to Alzheimer’s disease, offering new insights on how the situation develops over time rather than different risk factors.

StudyPublished in the journal EBOMedicineChecked longitudinal health data from about 25,000 patients in the health data warehouse at the University of California and validated the findings in all US research programs at the national level.

Contrary to previous research that focused on individual riskThe UCLA analysis mapped the sequential clinical pattern that revealed how the conditions move towards Alzheimer’s disease.

“We found that multi-step tracts may indicate more risk for Alzheimer’s disease compared to single conditions,” said Mingzhou Fu, a medical informatics pre-dearly student at the UCLA. “Understanding these routes can fundamentally change how we contact for early detection and prevention.”

Research identified four major trajectory groups:

  • Mental health route: Psychiatry state is leading to cognitive decline
  • Encephalopathy route: Brain laxity state which increases over time
  • Mild cognitive loss pathway: gradual cognitive decline progression
  • Vascular disease path: Heart condition that contributes to dementia risk

Each route showed separate demographic and clinical characteristics, suggesting that different population can be unsafe for different progress routes.

The study found that about 26% of clinical progress showed continuous directional orders. For example, hypertension often occurred before the depressive episode, leading to an increase in the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Dr., Assistant Professor of Neurology at UCLA Health. Timothy Chang said, “Identifying these sequential patterns rather than focusing on diagnosis in isolation can help doctors to improve Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis.”

When validated in an independent population, these multi-step projections predicted the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, which is more accurately than single diagnosis alone. This discovery shows that health care providers Can use the trajectory patterns for:

  • Promoted Risk Stability: First high risk patients in the progression of the disease
  • Target intervention: disrupt harmful sequences before proceeding
  • Personal Prevention: Sewing Strategies Based on Person

In a diverse, national level representative Kohrast in the US Research Program, recognition confirmed that these trajectory patterns apply to various population and demographic.

The team analyzed 5,762 patients, who contributed to the Pragati Project of 6,794 unique Alzheimer’s. Using advanced computational methods including dynamic time warring, machine learning clustering, and including Network analysisResearchers mapped temporary relations between the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
