Two Netflix movies, “Frankenstein” and “Kpop Demon Hunters,” won multiple Academy Awards tonight.
Director Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of “Frankenstein” won best production design, best costume design and best makeup and hairstyling, while ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ becomes Netflix’s most watched movie ever Won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
In recent years, films produced and distributed by streaming companies have had a frequent presence at the Oscars. “Roma,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” Winning major awards. However, the biggest prize seems to be out of Netflix’s reach — Apple’s “CODA,” which was released near the peak of the pandemic, still remains Only streaming film to win Best Picture.
Host Conan O’Brien also noted the presence of Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos at the beginning of the ceremony, joking, “It’s exciting: It’s his first time in the theater!”
“Frankenstein” was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor. Netflix’s “Train Dreams” and Apple’s “F1” (which won best sound) were also nominated for best picture. That award has not yet been announced at publication time, but is widely seen as a two-way race between “one-on-one battles” and “sinners.”
