Pruitt, who was sentenced to a six-year “show cause” order in 2023 following an NCAA violation ruling, will coach at Tennessee for the first time since being fired in January, 2021.
Following a formal show cause hearing held on October 23, the NCAA Committee on Violations determined that Jacksonville State demonstrated “sufficient cause” to modify the remaining terms of Pruitt’s show cause order, allowing his employment in a restricted analyst position.
Pruitt will serve in a role that does not involve interacting with recruits and his interactions with players will be limited. He has already been suspended for a year from coaching sports, and part of the original punishment included barring him from off-campus recruiting in his first year returning to college coaching.
In 2022, the NCAA charged Tennessee’s football program with 18 alleged Level I violations, the most serious under its rules, for impermissible recruiting benefits totaling approximately $60,000 that were paid to prospective players and their families under Joe Pruitt. He was fired for cause by Tennessee in January 2021 and did not receive any of his $12.6 million buyout after an internal investigation revealed what Chancellor Donde Plowman said were serious violations of NCAA rules.
This past March, Pruitt Filed a lawsuit against the NCAA Demanding and claiming the $100 million is a conspiracy with the university to make it a “sacrificial lamb”.
If Pruitt were to leave Jacksonville State and try to get a job at another school, he would have to go through the same “show cause” process with the NCAA’s infractions committee. The show cause order expires in July, 2029.
