ex number 1 Daniil Medvedev He was fined 6,000 euros ($7,000) for unsportsmanlike conduct broke his racket seven times During the 6-0, 6-0 loss matteo berettini at the Monte Carlo Masters last week, the ATP Tour said on Monday.
Medvedev, who is currently ranked 10th, faced a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct by the chair umpire for his actions at the start of the second set of Wednesday’s match.
The fine is smaller than the $76,000 and $42,500 imposed on Medvedev for outbursts at last year’s Australian Open and US Open respectively.
Medvedev, who received a bye in the first round, earned 45,520 euros ($50,000) in prize money from the Monte Carlo tournament.
The 30-year-old Russian was already struggling when he hit his forehand into the net to take the opening service game of the second set and trail 2-0. He then slammed his racket near the baseline, before picking it up and throwing it towards a tarpaulin at the end of the court.
Nevertheless, Medvedev continued to lift his frame and break it down until he was so destroyed that he could fit through a hole in a courtside trash can, as the crowd sarcastically cheered him on.
Medvedev, who won the US Open in 2021, lost the match in 49 minutes.
