Los Angeles–With multiple offers in free agency, kyle tucker ultimately affected by los angeles dodgers‘Championship Pedigree.
“It’s a big decision, so you still have to consider everything,” he said, “but this team and this city and the fan base make some decisions a little easier to make. Ultimately that’s what we wanted to do is come here and be a part of it and try to win another World Series.”
Tucker signed a $240 million, four-year contract with the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers. New York Mets and World Series runner-up toronto blue jays. He may opt out after two or three years.
“Obviously, we started out low,” joked Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations. “That doesn’t mean it’s going to be two, three, four years here. It could be longer than that. For him to choose us when he’s had other long-term and other short-term ones, I think it shows the growth and progress we’ve made in creating a destination location.”
Tucker receives a $64 million signing bonus, of which $54 million is paid on February 15 and $10 million is paid on February 1, 2027. He receives a salary of $1 million this year and $55 million in 2027, and has player options worth $60 million for 2028 and 2029.
Each season from 2027-29, $10 million has been deferred. The deferred amount for all years is payable in 10 equal installments on every 1st December from 2036-45.
They also get a hotel suite on road trips.
Tucker’s average annual value of $60 million, without taking into account deferred money, ranks second in baseball history shohei ohtani$70 million on his 10-year deal with the Dodgers that runs through 2033. In addition to Tucker’s $30 million in deferred money, Los Angeles owes $1.0945 billion in deferred compensation to 10 players from 2028-47.
“There really wasn’t anyone who advanced our World Series prospects for 2026 more than Kyle Tucker,” general manager Brandon Gomes said.
Tucker’s signing reignited discussion of management proposing a salary cap in collective bargaining after the Dodgers added another star to one of the game’s highest payrolls.
“We don’t pay too much attention to it because we work within the rules and do everything we can to put ourselves in the best position possible, both short-term and long-term, and we’re not thinking about the more macro things outside of that,” Friedman said. “It’s about how we can win as many games as possible and put ourselves in the best position to win a championship in 2026 without compromising ourselves in the future and falling off the proverbial cliff.”
Manager Dave Roberts said, Tucker will play right field and probably bat second or third in the lineup. Ohtani, who usually leads, was working out on the Dodger Stadium field before Tucker’s introductory news conference. teoscar hernandez Will move from right field to left field.
“From top to bottom this organization is first class,” Tucker said. “It will be a lot of fun to compete with these guys and hopefully compete for another three-peat here.”
Tucker wore Dodgers jersey number 23 along with Roberts and Gomes. He wore number 30 for most of his career Houston Astros And during his lone season chicago cubs Last year. Roberts wears number 30 in honor of his mentor, Dodgers star Maury Wills.
Tucker said he chose 23 in honor of his former Astros teammate Michael Brantley, who wore the number before retiring in 2022. They won the World Series that year, although Brantley was sidelined during the postseason.
Tucker has been criticized for his perceived casual playing style. Last August, he was criticized by Cubs fans for not running out ground balls and lacking intensity. He acknowledged that he might be perceived this way because of “my little conduct.”
“I try to do my best out there, no matter how I feel or what the situation is,” he said.
The Dodgers sought out clubhouse personnel, training staff, teammates and coaches to learn about Tucker’s competitive structure and work ethic.
“His demeanor is such that it’s not an outwardly enthusiastic personality, and so I think it could be misinterpreted,” Friedman said. “For us, it’s about how he competes, how he works? That’s what gave us a lot of instincts that when he’s in the box, when he’s in the outfield, he competes just like anybody else.”
Roberts investigated Tucker himself along with other managers and coaches.
“There is an internal fire that I see,” he said.
At last summer’s All-Star Game, NL starter Tucker assured the Dodgers that he wanted to continue improving.
“He talked a lot about how much he cares about the details,” Friedman said. “Anything we have that can help him get better in any aspect — whether it’s on defense, on base, in the batter’s box — he says, ‘I’m ready for it.’ So to have a guy who has achieved what he has, but still has that kind of growth mindset, there are people who make it easier.”
Roberts said he believes Tucker is a potential MVP candidate with the potential to win another Gold Glove.
“With a lot of guys around him, there are more runs to be scored. I think he’s going to have the ability to score runs,” Roberts said. “He’s a five-tool player, he loves to compete, he loves to play games, he’s active in the community, he’s a smart player.”
