TESERO, Italy – Norway’s Johannes Hosflot Klebbo completed his historic gold medal haul in the men’s cross-country skiing events by winning his sixth race on Saturday and setting a record for most gold medals won by an athlete at a single Winter Olympics.
Klebo’s victory in the 50 kilometer mass start race broke a nearly 50-year-old record set by American speed skater Eric Hayden, who won five golds at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.
All of Hayden’s wins were in individual races and two of Klebo’s wins came in team events, so Hayden’s record for individual wins still stands.
Klebo extended the record for most Winter Olympic gold medals in a career to 11 over three sports. The previous record was eight, which was broken by Klebo on February 15.
