Sen Mark Kelly (D-Eries) said on Sunday that the late Conservative activist Charlie Kirk had “every right” to speak at the Utah Valley University Campus on Wednesday.
Kelly said in an interview on NBC News’s “Meat the Press”, “Charlie Kirk and I didn’t agree politically. I am a Democrat. He is clearly a Republican. He was one of my components.”
“One thing we agreed to is that he has the right to speak about issues in college complexes as he was on last Wednesday,” the liberal Democrat continued. “He had every right to be there.”
Kelly also praised Kirk for listening to those who disagreed with him.
Kelly said, “And I will give her a lot of credit: she gave people a platform. And he listens to the people.” “I had a difference of opinion from him.”
Kelly said that she feels that Kirk’s murder would be “one of those moments” that “people remember.” He said that he hopes that people will be more aware of the sources of their knowledge and start looking for those who bring people together.
“I think it’s going to have a long -term effect. I hope it can be a positive. I hope people will go and start thinking about it: Are they getting their information from those who are trying to exploit us or people who are trying to unite us?” Kelly said.

Kelly said, “We have seen the Governor of Utah, who have received me to give a lot of credit, who have tried to bring this country together. We have not seen that the President of the United States, and I don’t think we can expect.”
“I have seen it from my Senate colleague in Utah, John Curtis, who is very thoughtful about how he is contacting this,” he continued. “So my hope is that people go to those people who are not trying to take advantage of this tragic incident.”
