In “Inside Out”, Joey once skated around the headquarters dejectedly looking at Riley’s old hockey memories. On Sunday, an NHL game will be re-imagined in the mind of Riley – the hockey-loving hero of the Pixar films – this time with Joey wearing skates and actually playing the game.
But it won’t just be happiness. A whole host of emotions will be at play to create plenty of key memories on and off the ice.
Hockey has always been one of Riley’s biggest passions. Will take the snow instead of his foghorn or firehawks New York Rangers And washington capitalsSunday at 7 PM ET espn app and on Disney+Disney Channel and Disney XD.
In honor of the real-time animated alternate broadcast, here’s a “scouting report” for each Emotion heading into the Inside Out Classic with our best guesses about their preferred position, playing style, strengths and challenges. That doesn’t mean this is what we’ll see of them on Sunday – but it might be close!

starting lineup
Joy Top-Line Center
Style: goal scorer
Strength: optimistic, energetic, intense
Weaknesses: backchecking
Joey cares deeply about her teammates and the score on the board. She is a true team player who is also a superstar who shines – willing to win a great game while giving credit to the entire team. His lighthearted attitude allows him to laugh off comments that he is late to skate when the puck is in his own zone.
anger trigger
Style: physical, in your face
Strength: passionate, protective, fair
Weaknesses: angry
Every team needs an angerer – the player who doesn’t do any funny business and will be the first to break into a scrum. Wrath never met a check he didn’t complete or a puck battle he didn’t win. But be careful – he gets a little nervous when things go unfair, so even the slightest whimper or wrong move can cause Anger’s head to burst into flames (and if cocked down, the ice can melt and cancel the game).
sadness goalkeeper
Style: stand-up goaltending
Strength: helpful, comfortable, selfless
Weaknesses: Maybe a timeout is needed
Sadness isn’t the type of goaltender to make highlight-reel two-pad stacks, flash windmill gloves or make scorpion saves – with Sadness you get reliable goaltending, often on the feet. The puck will be moved as quickly as possible – mostly because Sadness is frustrated that the puck has reached his crease. If Sadness takes over the butterfly state, it is because she is going to lie down on the ice and cry, giving opponents a chance to gain an edge over her and her pile of tears.
fear defense
Style: keeper responsible for staying at home
Strength: prepared, protective, intense
Weaknesses: doesn’t take risks
Fear is essentially the savior of Riley’s life – remember when Fear saved Riley from tripping on a lamp cord? protect! Fear will remain in his own territory, waiting for opponents to approach him and remove the threat as quickly as possible. In fact, Fears would throw a stretch pass to Joey for a scoring chance. But fear is only willing to take so much; Jumping out of the way or sidestepping the issue is too ambitious and can create big concerns. You can’t take that chance!
anxiety coach
Style: Strategist, down to the last detail
Strength: perfectionist, meticulous
Weaknesses: There’s a lot of anxiety when a team goes down by a goal (or more).
Even with a five-goal lead, worries are still looming and coming to terms with worst-case scenarios. She is constantly thinking 10 steps ahead of the opponent, armed with organized playlists and planning to ensure that the team does not make any mistakes to lose the game. And if the team needs to dig a hole – be careful. Set plays, line combo changes are coming fast. Goalkeepers may change four or even five times!
disgusting general manager
Style: skilled
Strength: Bold, glamorous, caring
Weaknesses: Wow!
After a steady career on the ice, Disgust finds a second life as the team’s general manager – she knows how to pick great players, not ones that will be rotten apples (or worse, broccoli) in the locker room. It is very difficult to impress, so every player has to be on their A-game to make the team. No fool can tolerate hatred. You need to make an impact quickly and often. She can smell foul odor (intense!) from a mile away.

rest of the roster
embarrassment mascot
Style: comfortable when hidden
Strength: shy, sensitive, kind
Weaknesses: afraid to show it
Listen to me. Shyness loves to disappear into her big, soft hoodie, so what better place for her than inside a big, soft mascot suit! By hiding in plain sight, perhaps he will be able to demonstrate his tenderness and compassion to everyone around him without having to hide in the corner. Or maybe he gets nervous about the idea and finds a quiet place to be alone.
ennui winger
Style: elite play caller
Strength: Technical expert, talented, skilled (when she wants to be)
Weaknesses: not impressed with you
Ennui is the playcaller who is so good at devising the perfect plan, and yet so disinterested that you get frustrated watching her because it’s so natural to her – it’s as if she’s thinking, “Okay, well, I’ll do it myself, argh” before devising the perfect low-to-high cycle and throwing it up the ice for the game-winning goal. Of course, Ennui’s response is, “Yeah…whatever.”
jealousy fourth line winger
Style: durable
Strength: attentive, charmed, expressive
Weaknesses: ambitious
Jealousy is small, but her dreams are big! She may be teetering on the fourth row, but her small size has never stopped her from speaking her mind, and her big bright eyes are always looking for the next big thing. She knows she has the potential to be the best… she just wants someone to give her a chance to prove it.
Nostalgia Hall of Fame Color Commentator
Style: legend
Strength: Evocative, detailed, warm and fuzzy
Weaknesses: present
Do you remember the time Riley scored a goal? I remember the sadness…
Nostalgia is the HOF player who takes to the broadcast booth after retirement to tell the best stories about his career. Be it a game-winning goal to win the cup, or a save by her goalkeeper to advance to the finals, she never forgets. Her stories are detailed and mesmerizing… but she may miss a play call or two while basking in her past glories.
