Rape Adam Smith (D-Calif.), Ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, said on Wednesday that the expectations for President Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska are low.
“I think President Trump has really likely like the expectations of low balls. With his conversation [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] With Zelancesi and Europe show that, “Smith said during an appearance on” The Hill “of the news.
He said, “I don’t think it’s especially bad that they have a conversation. What is bad till date that President Trump has not shown, I think, unity behind Ukraine is actually to put pressure on Putin,” he said.
Democrats shared growing concerns about Trump’s ability to keep Putin accountable to attack Ukraine in 2022.
The President supported secondary sanctions on Kremlin, which is expected to be released last Friday and said Ukraine would need to engage in “land exchange -up” to end the war.
Zelansky strongly stated that he would not turn the Donbas region, currently occupied by Russia in exchange for peace. The Ukrainian leader also urged Trump and Putin to add security guarantee to any proposed agreement to ensure that the war in Eastern Europe would be resolved after more than a decade conflict.
Smith shared similar feelings and urged Trump to inform Putin that he had received to live within the prescribed limits.
“Success seems like Putin is walking away from this, whatever Trump administration was January, February and March, which was giving me a green light in Ukraine, it is gone. I have to be re -recited,” Smith said.
He said, “Success seems to be strong against Putin’s invasion in Ukraine. And this should be done in this summit.”
Putin and Trump will meet in an an anocracy in the absence of Zelanceci on Friday. Officials hope that the talks will give rise to a tripartite discussion that will speed up a permanent ceasefire.
