A major new study led by Queen Mary University of London has been published in The Lancet Public Health. It found that of the five million surgical procedures carried out by the NHS each year, around 300,000 are performed on high-risk individuals, and within 90 days of surgery, four out of five of these high-risk patients die, accounting for more than half of all hospital days and almost a third of emergency readmissions.
