Former Vice President Kamala Harris was pressed in a BBC interview about why she did not raise concerns about former President Biden’s health before deciding to drop out of the race.
In an interview with the BBC, Harris was asked about a section of her new book, “107 Days,” in which she wrote that she did not raise the issue of Biden’s weakness with the former president, nor did he raise the issue with him.
Harris explained that she is now wondering whether she should have expressed concerns about his ability to run for president, but said she was not concerned about his ability to do the job.
When Harris was asked about his comments in the book, he said, “Let’s be more precise.” “There is a very serious difference between the ability to become President of the United States and the ability to run for President of the United States.”
“It’s on that last piece that I talk about in the book, about my concern about his ability, his stamina level, his energy, especially running against the current president,” she said.
He added, “But let’s be clear, my question was never about his ability to be president.”
Harris stepped into the 2024 presidential race as the Democratic nominee after Biden ended his campaign following a disastrous debate that raised concerns about her mental and physical fitness.
“I consider whether I should have spoken to him urging him not to run for re-election, because of what that would entail and, most importantly, what’s at stake,” Harris said in a BBC interview.
“So my concern, and especially on reflection, was I really should have brought it up,” he said. “But as I also wrote, part of the issue was whether this would actually be an effective and productive conversation, otherwise it would appear to be self-serving to me.”
