MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Sheriff’s deputies are investigating an alleged vandalism and theft at the North Carolina home of a retired NASCAR driver last week. Greg Biffle, One of seven people killed in a plane crash last month.
An alleged burglary and forced entry was reported last Thursday at the Biffle home in Mooresville, according to an incident report from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Darren Campbell said Wednesday that investigators believe someone broke into the home’s safe. Campbell said the incident report identified $30,000 in cash and a backpack as stolen, along with some guns and memorabilia.
Campbell said no arrests have been made and no one else was in the home at the time of the alleged crimes. The incident report states that the house was last found safe on the afternoon of January 7.
“We’re working on the case. We’re waiting for some digital evidence,” Campbell said. He said that interviews are also being conducted.
A business jet carrying Biffle, Biffle’s wife, two children and three other people crashed Dec. 18 as it tried to return to an airport in Statesville, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Charlotte – just minutes after taking off from there.
Federal investigators said the Cessna C550 burst into flames when it hit the ground just short of the runway. Everyone on board the ship died.
No cause of the accident has been disclosed. Biffle was one of three people on the plane with a pilot’s license. Immediately after the crash investigators said they did not know who the chief pilot of the flight was.
A public memorial service for Biffle, who won 19 NASCAR Cup Series races in his career, and the six others who died will be held Friday morning at the Charlotte arena.
