Green Bay, Wis.– green BayDoug Gottlieb says he is stepping away from his radio show to focus his full attention on his coaching responsibilities.
Gottlieb has been coaching as well as maintaining his national sports talk radio show since being hired by Green Bay in May 2024. Gottlieb said Wednesday that he plans to end his radio show at the end of this week or next week, though he will continue to do the podcast.
“Right now, we’re going to take a break from it,” Gottlieb said in his news conference after Green Bay’s 67-64 win. UC Santa Barbara“I have to live a life, I have to be there for these kids, I have to really dig into this because we’re building something good here,”
He described the decision as “a difficult one for me, but a wise one at some level.”
Gottlieb has worked as a broadcaster for nearly two decades, but he had no college coaching experience when Green Bay hired the former Oklahoma State guard. Green Bay took up the rent, allowing Gottlieb to maintain his radio show.
Although Gottlieb says his players deserve a “fully dedicated coach”, he believes he has been fully dedicated to coaching even during his radio show. But he also wanted to make sure he was ready to do as much as possible for his team.
Gottlieb saw a recent example of how his two jobs interfered with each other. His radio responsibilities prevented him from riding the team bus for the trip to Indianapolis, so he flew there himself instead.
“I don’t think that’s what I want to do as a coach,” Gottlieb said.
Green Bay went 4-28 in Gottlieb’s first season and is 6-7 this year. Phoenix has won five of its last seven games.
