FIFA adds new, more expensive, World Cup ticket categories

FIFA added new, even more expensive categories of tickets for this year’s World Cup, asking up to $4,105 for a front tier 1 seat. United States of America opener against paraguaya June 12 in Inglewood, California.

Last week, FIFA had asked for a maximum price of $2,735 for Category 1 tickets for the match, but added a new “front category” price.

FIFA also added a Front Category 2 tier to its sales website without public announcement, asking $1,940 to $2,330 for those tickets for the US opener. The new categories were first reported by The Athletic on Thursday.

The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in 16 cities across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Soccer’s governing body described Category 1 as “the highest-priced seats, primarily located in the lower tier” in its “Ticket products and categories” information on 9 September, but it appears that some seats in that category have been withheld.

It labeled Category 2 as “located outside Category 1 areas, available on both the lower and upper levels”.

FIFA did not respond to an email sent to its media office seeking comment.

The world soccer governing body also added Front Tier 1 seats for up to $3,360 for Canada’s first match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.

For round-of-16 games, it added $905 seats in Philadelphia.
