In the clip from his Wednesday news conference, Penix talks about his fiancée and former coaches who have been there to support him. Some people who shared the segment jumped into the caption that Penix didn’t have anyone on the Falcons’ coaching staff or roster looking for him, a sign that spread across social media over the past few days.
“Stop looking for stuff on a young person,” Morris said Friday. “You don’t need this stuff on it. It is what it is. But all the things that people do, it doesn’t affect this building.
“I just feel bad for the kid. I don’t want the kid to have to deal with things that don’t matter or things that aren’t real. … Let his problems be his problems, like third downs. Let’s fix them. Don’t make [a thing] He doesn’t exist.”
Penix was asked to clarify what he meant during a press conference Friday, but he declined, saying that everyone at the Falcons facility knows the truth.
Morris said he and Penix were joking about practice conditions this week. Morris said Penix has himself, offensive coordinator Zach Robinson, quarterbacks coach DJ Williams, offensive passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach TJ Yates and senior offensive assistant Ken Zampis. Robinson, Williams and Yates all played quarterback. Morris also noted the veteran quarterback’s contributions cancer cousinJoe is supporting Penix.
Williams said he talks to Penix and other Falcons quarterbacks more than he talks to his own children. He said he did not need to speak to Penix about the viral clip.
“Honestly, I don’t even pay attention to it,” Williams said. “As long as we know. I mean, everything else is just elevator music.”
Penix’s first full season as the Falcons’ starting quarterback has been an up-and-down one. He is completing 58.8% of his passes for 1,807 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Penix’s 53.6 QBR ranks 19th in the NFL.
