It’s a stunning turnaround for a franchise that started the 2023-24 season with a 3-36 record and finished with 14 wins.
The Pistons have a chance to surpass all the great Detroit teams, including the “Bad Boys” of yesteryear. And it makes sense that these Pistons, like the Isiah Thomas-led teams of old, would put Boston on the path to reaching an important goal. Detroit will visit the Celtics on Wednesday night in the NBA Cup game.
To tie the record, Detroit had to overcome another longtime rival, the depleted, injury-ravaged Pacers, on Monday. Indiana showed the toughness of a team that played in the NBA Finals a few months earlier, but still lost 2–15.
Cunningham, the former No. 1 pick, has led Detroit’s race to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. He had 24 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists on Monday night. Jalen DurenOne of the league’s top rebounders this season, had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and caris levert 19 points were added.
jaden ivy Saturday marked the return of an already dangerous Pistons team. The fifth pick in the 2022 draft is out after suffering a broken fibula in January. He scored 12 points against the Pacers on Monday, playing only 12 minutes due to the minutes restriction.
Still, Cunningham didn’t like that the Pistons squandered a lead of nearly 18 points in the fourth quarter.
“We should not have allowed him to come back into the game like this,” he said. “So watch the movie, be upset about the movie, but work with it, learn from it and get better.”
