Big 12 commish Brett Yormark ‘doubling down’ on 5+11 CFP model

Frisco, Texas-Big 12 Commissioner Brett Eurmark so-called 5+11 Future College is “doubled” on football playoff format, while accepting that it can benefit their league more in future.

Big 12 and ACC have pushed the model, which will provide automatic dialects to the five highest-lined conference champions, Plus 11-big dialects set by the CFP Selection Committee. The 5+11 model received some support in SEC spring meetings, while Big Ten has focused more on a model that will reward four automated dialects and SEC teams, as well as two apps for Big 12 and ACC.

Yormark, his fellow commissioner and notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bewakwa should determine the CFP format beyond 2026 and 1 December.

“Five -11 is fair,” Yormark said at his opening address in Big 12 Media Days in The Star on Tuesday. “We want to earn it on the field. This may not be the best solution for Big 12 today … but long-term, knowing what we are making, what we are investing, this is the right format for us. And I am doubling 5-11 today.”

Yormark said he hopes that the ACC Commissioner Jim Philips would take to the same place when the league held his media days in Charlotte, Northern Carolina this month. Yormerk postponed Big 12 as a “deepest football conference in the US” and said he believes that the league would have several CFP entries this season.

Yormark told ESPN that it is “relatively confident” that CFP will go to 16 teams in 2026 and complete the next stages to make it.

“The first step is that we got to find out, with the selection process, we are like a deep dive,” he said. “Where can we improve it? Where can we modernize it? Are we using the right metrics? Is whether or not we are going through that conversation?
