Shelton and Songo were meeting for the third time this year in a major, in which Shelton won their previous competitions at the Australian Open and French Open. This was the first time since 1984 when two people met in each of the first three big companies of a season – that year, John Mconaro and Jimmy Consors played in French, Wimbledon and US Open, Maceno won all three meetings (at that time the Australian Open was held in December).
