Alex Palu Wrapped in its fourth Indycar Championship in the last five sessions at Portland International Raceway on Sunday, when the title contenders Pato o’Ward Lost electricity early in the race.
The O’Ward started with the pole and was mathematically the only driver to defeat Palu for the championship. Palu went with a comfortable 121-point lead on the O’Ward in Standing on Sunday and until he left Portland above 108 points, he would get the championship in the first race of three consecutive weekends to close the season.
The race on the Estore Cup Portland Road course became only 22 laps when Oward had an electronic issue on his arrow McLaren Chevrolet and had to stop an unplanned pit. He returned to the track under nine laps from the leaders.
Palu finished third, O’Ward finished 25th and Palu secured the title with two races in the Indycar season and took an impossible 151 points.
The Palu was feudalist in the closing part of the race and was sometimes unnecessarily aggressive-even four laps remaining the remaining and running the course with drag-rasing Christian lundguard for the position.
“We are here to win. That’s why we are here. We have said it many times when we come here, although we have a big goal to win the championship, our priority is always to win the race and win every weekend,” Palu said insisting. “Even though it could be okay to be in third place, we wanted to win.”
Palu has won all four of his championships for chip Ganasi racing and ran away with this one, to set the pace for Ganasi to win his 17th Indycar title in 30 years with a win in the first two races of the year by hurricaneing his third, gate. 17 championship tie pension racing.
Twelve of Ganasi’s Indycar titles have come in the last 17 years, which has started with a brilliant 2008 season of Scott Dixon, in which he kept together with a run similar to a Palu this year. In 2008, Dixon won six races, including Indianapolis 500, six poles and his six championships.
Ganasi has dressed several times before the drivers dressed to hold herself in unnecessary positions, but this time there were no qualms with Palu racing, working hard to win a race, instead of sitting back and on the coast for the title.
“It depends on the situation, the driver. Like Alex said, we go to this race with that 10 car team, every race, we want to win the race, okay? That’s what we reached this point,” Gansi said. “We have not changed anything today. You cannot play God.”
But Ganasi admitted that Palau created a brief intimidation with his determination of the hard race in the final interval.
“When he was fighting for the second or third, I was fine with it,” Gansi said. “I had to say that when he went there, my heart left a heartbeat, but apart from this I was everything for it.”
Only the AJ Froom (Consumption) and Dixon (six) have more championships than Palu, which broke by winning the oval through this season, eventually to show the entire package. This was clear years ago, and he is entangled with a contract with Arrow McLaren in a violation of 30 million dollars of the contract with Arrow McLaren to join that team.
Instead he remained loyal to Ganasi and this year, Palu won five out of the first six races, including Indianapolis 500, which removed him in the last five attempts. That victory at the Brickyard cemented the path of the Spaniad for another championship and has been untouchable since then.
Palu moved to Portland with a chain-high eight wins, five poles, 11 top-five finish in 14 races, 563 laps LEDs and 1.2 average finish. He padded those numbers on Sunday.
Palu joined Dario Franchise, Sebastian Burdi and Ted Horn as the only driver in series history to win three consecutive titles. But, with two more races this season, Palu has a chance to tie Indycar Record to win the season set by Foyt in 1964 and in 1970.
