A gunman set fire to a Midtown Manhattan building on Monday, with some of the National Football League offices and some of the top financial firms in the country, who died of an off-duty working in the building to New York City police officer and four other, sources told The Associated Press.
The suspect was identified as Shane Tamura of Nevada, two people informed on the investigation. Law enforcement officials recognized Tamura’s body, including a hidden carry permit from Las Vegas, people said.
Police sources told ABC News that they believe that the suspect later died of a self-inspired gunman after a 445-mankil building at 345 Park Avenue. Upon entering the lobby, he opened fire on the police officer who was doing personal security work when he was shot and killed, after being barricaded on the 33rd floor, before killing himself, sources told ABC.
NFL employees were asked for shelter in place, Jeff Darlington of ESPN told. NFL is located on five floors through eight.
ABC News reported that the officer was taken to the Well Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, where he was declared dead. At least one of the citizens was brought to Belvue Hospital.
The Fire Department of New York said that emergency employees were called to the Park Avenue Office building on Monday evening. A spokesman said the call came around 6:30 pm but did not give any other details.
Mayor Eric Adams said many people were injured. He posted a clip on social media, urging the people inside the office building as the police officers were searching for a floor-by-floor. The Mayor said that he was taken to the hospital to talk with families and loved ones of the people involved.
Local TV footage showed lines of people who evacuated the office building with their hands above their heads. The building includes Blackstone’s office and Ireland’s consulate.
Jessica Chen told ABC News that she was watching a presentation with dozens of others on the second floor when she “heard several shots in quick succession from the first floor.”
He and others ran into a conference room and stopped the tables against the door.
“We were honestly, really scared,” she said, saying that she read her parents to tell her that she loves them.
The building where the shooting took place is in a busy area of Midtown, which is located north of the Grand Central Terminal and is a block east of the St. Patrick Cathedral.
The emergency management warning system of the city warned of traffic delays for public transport in the area, road closure and disruption.
