Former first lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday that women need to stand up against those who might try to silence them.
In an interview with People magazine, Obama reflected on his life and how he accepted entering his 60s. He described how his father raised him to be proud of his height.
Obama said, “I’m still working, waking up every day, looking in the mirror and telling myself I’m smart and beautiful, kind and worthy.” “I don’t think the work ever stops for women, especially Black women, because sometimes you don’t always get answers about it.”
She further said, “Women, today we are facing a time where those in power are trying to silence the voices of those with whom they disagree.” “And I think now more than ever, this is a time when we have to fight to remind ourselves that we matter, that we matter.”
At no point during the interview did Obama mention the current president. The former first lady discussed the pressures of “job, non-job” in her role from 2009 to 2017, and even her style choices were political. Obama said he “liked the fact that, afterward, people recognized what I was wearing.”
She said, “Because if I wear something and it sells out, that means most women can buy it. And I thought that was a good thing.” “I wanted the people of America, all people of all races, all political ideologies, to be able to connect with me.”
Analyzing her life now, which includes a dinner date with the former president and keeping herself healthy, Obama said she is putting herself first.
“This is the first time every decision I make is for me,” she told People.
Former President Obama was more explicitly political during a recent interview on the last episode of Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Criticism of Trump’s deployment National Guard troops were sent to his home state of Illinois.
“If I had sent the National Guard to Texas and said, ‘You know what? There’s a lot of problems in Dallas, there’s a lot of crime, and I don’t care what Governor Abbott says, I’m kind of going to take over law enforcement, because I think things are out of control,’ it’s surprising to me how Fox News would have responded,” Obama said, referring to the Texas government.
