We caught up with the Minnesota Twins legend on Monday, just a day after A-Rod revealed he tried to bring up 10-year-old Mahomes. Leave the gridiron for the diamond – and she made it clear that she’s happy with the way her life has turned out after the big choice.
Mauer, in case you weren’t aware, used to be a helluva quarterback. He was the top high school football recruiter in the country… and at one point, he accepted a scholarship offer to play bobby bowdenFlorida State Seminoles.
But Mauer was also a beast behind home plate — and after the Twins took him with the first overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft, he put down the pigskin.
And, this week at LAX, he told us he’s okay with the way his life has turned out from there.
“In the end, I’m glad I chose baseball,” he said with a smile.
Of course, Mauer had a 15-year career in the big leagues, and recorded a .306 batting average with six All-Star appearances. This summer, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
It’s very likely that the guy would have been just as effective had he remained under center… but you certainly won’t hear any Twins supporters questioning the decision in the near future.
